Davina Kirkpatrick

Dr. Davina Kirkpatrick (PhD, MA, PGCE) is an artist, researcher and lecturer, who works with arts based and qualitative research methodologies.

Creative practice and artistic projects.

In Davina’s work there is thread of playfulness and inquiry that connects a varied and diverse career spanning theatre design, public art, socially engaged practice, and collaborative interdisciplinary projects with the discipline of training in drawing, fine art, expanded print media (including film), architectural and sculptural glass and vitreous enamel.

Research Interests.

Her research interests are in purposeful/serious play, narrative inquiry, collaborative writing practices, arts based and practice based research methods, grief, loss and pain.

She has completed a PhD (PhD Thesis – Grief and Loss: Living with the presence of absence. A practice based study of personal grief narratives and participatory projects) and a NPIF (National Productivity Investment Fund) Research Fellowship –Beside Myself: Inside and Alongside, investigating chronic pain through arts based research.

During this time she has exhibited solo and collaborative work at Motorcade/Flashparade Gallery, B.V. Studios, Bristol; CAKE, Ireland; Bildwerk Frauenau, Germany; Back Lane West, Cornwall; F Block Gallery, Bristol; Bath University; The Museum in the Park Stroud; Trowbridge Museum; ECQI (European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry) KV Leuven as well as undertaking residencies at CAKE, Ireland; Bildwerk Frauenau, Germany; Back Lane West, Cornwall; Maker Heights, Cornwall.

Davina helped establish the trans-disciplinary research group the Bodies Collective and is also part of Space Place Practice (SPP), the Collaborative Artful Inquiry Network (CANINET) , Art, Resilience, Economy (ARE), Death n’stuff and Throes of Grief.

She has taught on undergraduate and postgraduate courses and facilitated participatory workshops with many different communities and ages.

She also runs a commission-based business for public and private clients.
